Ragnarocktoberfest's "The Stalking Dead"

Summary

The Stalking Dead is a very unique adaptation of the HvZ game type organized by OOD's own Tarik and other volunteers with the nonprofit Foam War Inc. Technically, it’s not just “HvZ,” but “HvHvHvZ.” Three competing human factions fight for limited resources on a smaller high school campus. Each human has limited lives when tagged by a human, but only a single life when tagged by a zombie. This makes for a particularly exhilarating game full of shifting alliances and betrayals on top of the usual paranoia that comes with normal HvZ.

The Stalking Dead is also one of the most autonomous and loosely structured of the HvZ-style games we feature. It relies on players seeking out tasks to earn rewards, and moderators only facilitate the players' requests.

The next game of The Stalking Dead is coming up on Saturday, October 12th, 2024, and registration is open now. With a Cyberpunk theme, this game will surely be more than just a leisurely stroll through Night City. We look forward to sponsoring, attending, and sharing great footage in the coming months.

Some features include…

Limited Resources

You are not allowed to bring any ammo for your blaster. Instead, everyone is given a starting capacity of ammo, and more ammo is doled out as a finite resource via mission completions and scavenger hunts. This incentivizes riskier and strategic play and forces people out of their home bases.

High Tech Tagging

Each player is also given a Near Field Communication (NFC) tag before the game. These NFC tags track lives, power-ups, and other stats during the game and ultimately chart an interactive map showing the spread of zombie contagion throughout the day.

Mission Variety

While other HvZ games may feel “on rails” like an amusement park dark ride, the loose “mission” structure lends itself to an increased variety of ways to engage: Completing puzzles can result in power-ups (or sometimes curses). Escorting NPCs through dangerous territory might be rewarded with in-game currency to exchange at the trading post. Zombies can convince humans to dance in order to form a zombie conga line. There’s no limit to how you can choose to play.
