The AIT + 40MAX Lightning is a compact brushless flywheel blaster collaboration from the makers of the popular 40mm air-powered cartridges. Featuring a familiar profile, this blaster improves on similar blasters with a smaller size, a unique brushless cam pusher, and a more ergonomic fire mode select switch. This flywheeler also promises improved trigger response with a two-stage trigger and an intelligent idling mode. Additionally, the included quick-release battery and integrated OLED ammo-counting display make the blaster a complete package for both beginners and competitive players. Available in two colors.

The good:
-Construction is pretty solid.
-Easy to configure settings after upgrading the firmware.
-Battery is easy to work with.
-The selector switch is very easy to access and flick on the fly.
The issues:
-The heavy spring in the trigger and mag release make it a smidge unpleasant to operate.
-More critically, the 9.08 firmware seems to have an incredibly strict rpm gate that forces the motors to hit the target rpm before powering the pusher motor, which has the incredibly frustrating side effect of adding a lot of delay to shots and completely dropping trigger inputs if they end before it hits the target rpm. This makes the max fps setting unusable for quick shots (the entire point of the side arm) and the next setting down still less reliable than I'd like. Setting D2 is where it becomes difficult to do a full trigger pull that doesn't complete a shot, but I'm only getting a little over 100fps on slightly used darts.
Fortunately, this has firmware updates available, so I'm hoping AIT can adjust the idle rpm pid tuning, or other code to make the highest fps setting usable.
-Last thing is the wifi always being on is questionable and a poor use of power. It should really require some kind of input to enable. There also seems to be faint buzzing from the back even in safe mode when idle spinning is off? Unsure if that is related.
As for the diana comparison, this is markedly easier to pick up and fiddle with thanks to the battery and power button, as well as much easier to configure thanks to the ambi selector switch and firmware toggles. On the other hand, the performance issue at max fps and the poor feel of the trigger/mag-release make me reach for the diana when it comes time for a game.

Snappy and ridiculously fast firing blaster, light and comfortable to use. Expensive but overall the only sidearm i can see myself ever needing to carry into a nerf war.
